How to Switch Propane Companies
Switching propane companies usually comes down to three things: what your current agreement says, who owns the tank, and when you make the change. Sorting those out first helps avoid unexpected fees or a gap in service.
Review your existing propane agreement
Start with the paperwork from your current supplier. Look for the contract length, renewal terms, any notice period required to cancel, and what happens to unused propane or prepaid balances.
If you can't find your agreement, ask your current supplier for a copy before making any decisions.
Find out who owns the tank
Tank ownership is often the biggest factor in a switch. If your current supplier owns the tank, another company generally can't fill it, and the tank will typically need to be removed and replaced by the new supplier.
If you own the tank, a new supplier may be able to begin service using your existing tank, subject to its own policies and any inspection it requires. Learn more in our tank ownership vs. leasing guide.
Possible removal, installation, or termination fees
Ask both your current and prospective suppliers about costs such as:
- Early termination fees under your current contract
- Tank removal or pump-out charges
- Installation or setup fees from the new supplier
- Leak checks or safety inspections required before new service begins
- How any propane left in a leased tank will be handled
Timing a transition between suppliers
Plan ahead so you are never without fuel. Many people prefer to switch outside the busiest heating months, when scheduling is often easier.
Coordinate dates with both companies so the new tank or first delivery is scheduled before the old service ends. If your tank is leased, consider timing the switch when your tank is low to reduce leftover propane.
Questions to ask a prospective provider
- Do you serve my ZIP code, and how soon can service start?
- Will you use my existing tank, or install a new one?
- What fees apply to starting service?
- What are your contract terms and cancellation policy?
- Do you offer automatic delivery, will-call, or budget payment plans?
- How do you handle emergency deliveries?
Every propane supplier sets its own pricing, service area, delivery policies, and contract terms. Always confirm details directly with the provider before you agree to service.
